There are many reported sour gas fields in the world with experts citing some 400 locations. Increasing energy demand will mean that these fields will be considered for development but the technical complexities alongside ecological constraints will require the resolution of a number of factors to ensure cost effective and environmentally safe progress is forthcoming.

The current interest in sour field developments in Abu Dhabi will mean that the UAE, in a relatively short space of time, will find itself the global leader in the field of sour gas development and cutting edge technology deployment.

The SGD project alone represents a new era in gas development in Abu Dhabi. The sourness of the feed gases along with the magnitude of the processed gas and produced sulphur will set a new benchmark for the gas processing and sulphur recovery industry.

Also the offshore Hail field project with its expected 700 million cubic feet per day is actively being pursued to obviate any production delays due to ever increasing gas demand. Moreover, other projects in North America, Russia, Kazakhstan and China are also giving rise to increased technology developments to fully understand the complexities involved in field and platform production systems to properly manage exploration and well completion technologies, hydrate prevention, oil-gas-water separation, water treating for disposal, sour gas dew point control, sour gas compression and reinjection and condensate stabilisation. Also with respect to gas treating and processing systems, ongoing developments in feed gas compression, sour gas dehydration, H2S and CO2 removal in varying degrees of concentration, CO2 recovery and sequestration and potential use in EOR injection are required to ensure the optimum practices are observed in sour gas field development.

In all of this, HSE is a major issue and none more so in the areas of Sulphur Recovery, Processing, Storage and Transfer. Sulphur by-product management is also an important factor given the supply and demand issues in certain parts of the world and could have a significant financial role in overall field development and planning as will the overall issue of long term sulphur storage.
