Greenhouse Effect

The term greenhouse is used in conjunction with the phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect. In this phenomenon, energy from the sun drives the earth’s weather and climate, and heats the earth’s surface. In turn, the earth radiates energy back into space. Some atmospheric gases (water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases) trap some of the outgoing energy, retaining heat somewhat like the glass panels of a greenhouse. These gases are therefore known as greenhouse gases. The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature on Earth as certain gases in the atmosphere trap energy.

The gases that are responsible for this effect are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, CFCs, out of which the most important ones are:

* water vapor, which contributes 36–70%
* carbon dioxide, which contributes 9–26%
* methane, which contributes 4–9%
* ozone, which contributes 3–7%

The major non-gas contributor to the Earth's greenhouse effect is the clouds which absorb and emit infrared radiation and thus have an effect on radiative properties of the greenhouse gases.
